Technical University of Liberec

The Technical University of Liberec (TUL) is a leading educational and scientific research institution with a long-standing tradition dating back to 1953. The university profiles as a modern education and innovation centre with close connections to industry and current technological trends. Thanks to its broad scope, it covers technical and natural sciences, economics, education, architecture, informatics, healthcare, and interdisciplinary programs that interconnect various fields of science.

It is mainly known for its research activities in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, the textile industry, and emerging technologies. The university significantly advances nanotechnologies and materials applied across various industries, healthcare, and other common and specialized applications.

A key component of its research activity is close cooperation with industrial partners, which include major Czech and international companies. Together, they conduct projects focused on innovation, technology transfer, and applied research. Modern laboratory facilities, computational capacities, and specialized workplaces strengthen TUL's scientific and research potential. An important aspect is supporting PhD students and young scientists actively participating in research activities.

TUL is actively involved in solving current global challenges beyond industrial production alone, such as sustainable technologies, environmental protection, energy efficiency, and digitalization.

The university leads the National Centre of Competence for Industrial 3D Printing. It is also part of the Bozek Vehicle Engineering National Center of Competence and the National Centre of Competence ENGINEERING. It is involved in key national and European research programs for innovations across various areas.

Currently, TUL is increasingly focusing on hydrogen technologies, particularly in the context of sustainable mobility and transportation. It builds on previous research in hydrogen combustion engines at the Department of Vehicles and Engines, for which the necessary infrastructure was already established. The university is expanding this technical infrastructure with a hydrogen laboratory equipped with a hydrogen generator, solid-state hydrogen storage, and a fuel cell testing station. At the same time, TUL is opening new research topics, such as the research of microbial risks associated with underground hydrogen storage. The university aims for a comprehensive approach to innovations in the production, storage, and efficient hydrogen consumption across various industrial sectors.
